| Well as you sit back in your chair and read this the bad weather has probably hit already with some strong South Westerly winds. The good news is the sea and weather will be back to normal by Saturday or latest Sunday.
The Durban beach front has been producing a couple grunter and some sporadic pockets of shad.
Over the weekend a ski boat interclub competition was held.

| Guys, you had better have a look at this. From Saturday the 6th check out The Kingfisher website www.kingfisher.co.za under the latest fishing report, there will be two items posted, one is “Prohibition of the fishing method “vertical jigging” from and the possession of “vertical jigs” on vessels within iSimangaliso”Signed by Andrew Phillip Zaloumis the Chief Executive Officer: iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority and the other is a notice from the Department of Environmental Affairs about the proposed new license fees for fishing, diving etc.
Shad for what it’s worth are nearly a non entity as anglers who actively target this specie are finding it very difficult to even locate them.

| Terry Nel from Port Edward reports that although the surf fishing is very quiet at the moment, reports have come in by divers that the large shad are around in deeper water.
Fishing at Umhloti, Smiler landed along tail brown ray of 16kg’s and the hooks pulled on a big shark after a fight that lasted about twenty minutes. This shark was probably a zambie, because Smiler slid out a grunter head as bait.
On the freshwater scene, Ryan Tippet, from Jozeni dam, is that the weather, for the most part, has been better for fishing.

Freshwater fishing’s “Holy Grail” now has dual holders; 22 lb 4 oz bass caught by Japan’s Manabu Kurita matches IGFA record held for 77 years by Georgia’s George Perry.
Fishing ski’s are also in on the action and reports coming from the Toti and Scottburgh areas suggest that fishing has definitively picked up over the past two weeks.

In the Durban area a few good fish have been landed although the fishing has been a little patchy.
The Ski Boat and fishing ski anglers have since last week carried on getting some good results as far as game fish are concerned.

| After nearly two months of really awful weather it looks as though summer has eventually set in and with it the much awaited summer fish.
Ski Boats and Fishing Ski’s have eventually started fishing after a few frustrating months and with some very good results from all along the coastline. Dorado are now being caught from the Sodwana area in the North and as far south as the Protea banks at Shelly beach.

| Results of the Postal Annual Meet fished over this past weekend as well as some photos have been posted on the Union’s website
The Park Rynie area is still fishing well as far as yellowtail kingfish are concerned. The Umdoni and Sezella areas are also producing a few of these fish and the odd pompano has been landed here.

| This week end sees the end of the Postal Rounds of the KZNCAU when they fish their Annual Meet at Salt Rock on the North Coast.
barry Tedder from Zululand Shore Angling reports that well into November and still no hot summer days, and no sandy’s.

Reporting on Zululand shore angling’s past postal competition, the third on the Zululand shore angling calendar to date. Where some 79 anglers turned out with their respective clubs to compete, catching a total of 98 fish telling up to 1112.7 weight points during a un interrupted period of eight hours at a venue of their choice

| There are signs of the weather letting up as some warmer weather was recently experienced.
On the fresh water side, Mike Laubscher went to Lake Jozini for some tiger fishing last week. It was a hot day of around 38 deg. C, the skies were clear and the NE wind was pumping.
Ski Boats have started catching some good numbers of dorado mainly off the deep reefs off Durban but quite a few have recently been caught on the shallower reefs off the North and South Coasts.
Chad Engelbreght and his 104.4kg honeycomb ray landed at Mapelane, this great fish was landed in one and a half hours with his Daiwa Saltist 50 reel.

| It has been a frustrating month for anglers and although weather reports suggest fair weather the gods change their minds and really come up with a recipe for disaster.
The World Carp Angling Championships was held from 21-25 October 2009 at Lac de I’Uby in Cazaubon, Barbotan, in the Southern part of France.
Ski boats and Fishing Ski’s are also experiencing the frustration of the shore bases anglers lately but for those that do get out, especially the ski boats some good bottom fishing can be had.

| After a few weeks of really bad sea and weather conditions things looks as though they are finally settling.
Mike from Nikao Fishing Adventures sent in this report on the 5th. “The sea has been rough lately with the large frontal system and today was no exception and so I had to postpone my deep sea fishing booking off Durban for safety reasons and decided to go down to Inanda Dam South Africa with some buddies for a morning of bass kissing (fishing).

| The windy season associated with spring has certainly kept up with tradition as howling winds from the North and South are now nearly a daily occurrence.
Ski boats are still having a great season as far as bottom fishing is concerned as there are plenty of daga and geelbek salmon coming out on both North and South Coasts.
Mike Laubscher from Nikao Fishing Adventures took 4 clients Deep Sea Fishing off Durban, they launched at 05h30 and there was a breeze blowing. They first collected some live bait and for a change this happened very quickly with only mackerel coming out and no sand soldiers for a change.

| Eventually the sardines finally made an appearance on our coastline but from a tourist and marketing perspective it had little impact as the ‘run’ basically lasted two days.
According to Port Edwards Terry Nel is that fishing is very much the same down there and shad and garrick are 'fish of the day' almost every day. Bronze bream over 2kg's in weight are being caught at Trafalgar and a nice baardman was taken at Spiro's Port Edward.
Ski Boat fishing remains stable with boats mainly targeting bottom fish in the form of daga and geelbek salmon. General bottom fishing has produced some good catches of rock cod and reds along with the odd big copper steenbras.

| With the onset of spring anglers can expect angling to improve as we are entering a period where winter fish are still here and the first of the summer fish start making an appearance.

ESA will be offering a sardine run package deal during June and July for anglers to participate in one of the greatest angling phenomenons along the South African coastline, namely the annual sardine run.
Ski Boats and Fishing Ski’s on the other hand are still having a wonderful season as both couta in the North Coast and snoek in the Durban area keeping this fraternity busy.

Brendon Claesson landed a good size black fin shark of 95kg’s at Light House, Port St Johns on the 23 rd May.
Eastern Province came first and they caught three of the five fish, the biggest being 82kg’s.

| Shore angling has over the past week really stepped up a gear as settled weather and sea conditions brought with it a good variety of fish.
Fishing skis have eventually started the game fish season off. A variety of fish are coming out along both North and South coasts.
It is much the same for the Ski boat fraternity where almost all boats now have changed their focus to Game Fish.
The Durban Ski- Boat Club Festival is being held on the 25th & 26th April 2009.

The Port Edward area has suddenly livened up and
even the fish have come to the party.
Anglers that are willing to take a quick trip to the North Coast
area will almost definitely be a worthwhile exercise when the
right weather patterns occur.
The Ski Boat and fishing ski anglers have since last week carried
on getting some good results as far as game fish are concerned.

With summer finally settling in anglers are finding
a new variety of fish.
In the Port Edward area, Terry Nel from Tacklenet (tel number
039 311 3013) reports that surf conditions are good and the water
is clearing up, but still not much to report.
Telkom Angling Club is hosting a social angling tournament in
aid of the ECR Toy Story Initiative. We urge all to participate.
The Ski Boat and fishing ski fraternity are now both seeking game
fish which seemed to have started a bit early this year but never
the less some good fish have started feeding.
On the ESA Saltwater Production we find out who takes away the
status as new ESA LBSA Pro Angler at the LBSA Finals held at Mazeppa
Bay in the Transkei.

With weather starting
to settle down somewhat, anglers who are targeting species other
than the abundance of shad that still seem to be around are
finding there are quite a few early summer fish around.
Details of the new safety regulations regarding Kayak Fishing
The North Coast is still producing some goods catches of garrick
at known spots such as Tongaat Long Beach, Tinley Manor and
the Tugella mouth and surrounding areas.
The South Coast seems to have gone off the boil a little as
far as garrick goes.
The Transkei, with the Port St Johns area in particular is still
giving anglers hours of fun during the day and at night.
Herewith are the results of the Common Venue Annual Meet fished
over the weekend 18-19 October 2008, supplied by Dave Nisbet,
the secretary of Kwa Zulu Natal Coast Anglers Union.
Ski boat angling is now at a turning point as some of the first
summer game fish have made their appearance.
Ray and Dean from ESA have been fishing in the Eastern Cape

With weather steadily improving and
warmer water pushing in fishing should start gaining momentum
as far as early summer fish are concerned.
The North Coast is also fishing well with Barracuda rocks and
the Tongaat long beach area featuring quite prominent.
The South Coast is still firing an all cylinders with very good
catches of garrick being reported in the Toti, Winkle and Illovo
stretches.
The Durban area itself should start fishing better now but shad
seem to be the only fish here that is causing concern amongst
anglers as almost any bait intended for other species seems to
be ravaged by shad.
The Transkei is also still producing a steady flow of fish, mainly
garrick and kob.
Here with a summary of the results of the Zululand Interclub fished
at Sodwana Bay over weekend 10-11 October 2008.
Ski Boats can start rigging their game fish equipment as the first
dorado have been landed in the Durban area as well as few specimens
on the South Coast.

Sardines made a somewhat welcome and surprising
comeback last week.
The Kingfisher hosts a free Fishing Ski Clinic on their premises
once a month by Markham Pollard and a Rock and Surf clinic run
by Ivan Stopforth.
Apart from the sardines, anglers are now generally finding some
good fishing from the shore although not as prolific as in previous
years.
The Transvaal Ski-boat Club has just completed their annual
Club Compo, celebrating their 50th Anniversary, which was fished
off Shelly Beach.
Ski boats have had a good start to the annual geelbek and daga
salmon season as good catches are being reported from Durban
based boats fishing at night
This month The Kingfisher starts their “Biggest Shad Competition”.
Also don’t forget to tune into SS1 on Tuesday at 19.00
for bass and Thursday at 19.30 for the salt water section, great
viewing.
