KZN FISHING REPORT - 28TH NOVEMBER 2009

FISHING REPORT 28TH NOVEMBER 2009.

Postal Annual Meet
Results of the Postal Annual Meet fished over this past weekend as well as some photos have been posted on the Union’s website.  Website -  www.kzncau.co.za.  Also, please do not forget the Annual General Meeting on 6 December 2009.

Anglers
The Park Rynie area is still fishing well as far as yellowtail kingfish are concerned. The Umdoni and Sezella areas are also producing a few of these fish and the odd pompano has been landed here.  Garrick are regularly being caught in these areasas well. The Umkomaas north bank stretch has also picked up quite dramatically as water colour in this particular area has gone a little off colour due to recent rains.

Edible fish, mainly yellowtail kingfish, grunter and shoal size kob seem to make up the bags here. For those anglers targeting bigger flatfish, there are already favorable reports of brown and honeycomb rays as well as the odd sand shark. With these conditions it should not take long for some of the bigger shark species to converge on this area. Reports of garrickand kob down at the Sandspit at Port Shepstone suggest that things are slowing down a bit. Anglers targeting bigger kob at this time of the year have to put in a couple of hours at night to be able to get any joy.

Brusher and bronze bream are now being actively targeted by most anglers. These fish can be caught in almost any weather conditions due to their habitat being in and around rocky ledges and bays. There are good reports of some bigger brusher being caught in traditional places like the Twini ledge and the rocky bays at Doonside. The Twini ledge has produced some very good fish of late but the criminal element has reached this spot as well. At least two incidents have been reported of anglers and sunbathers being threatened at knifepoint recently.

The north coast produces many fish particularly the La Mercy and Westbrook areas. Fishing in the Transkei should also start picking up as far as shark angling is concerned. Reports from the Hole in The Wall are suggesting that a few nice size raggies have come out recently and that some average size grey and hammerhead sharks have also been caught.

The Mtunzini Diamond classic
The Mtunzini Diamond classic, a fund raising initiative by the Zululand Juniors to raise funds for their national tournament to be fished in Zululand next year will be held on the 6th December in conjunction with the annual Turkey with a prizes totalling the value of R450,000.00. Please e-mail either Barry.Tedder@mondigroup.co.za or contreac@saol.com for a pre entry form at R180 per entry.

Ski Boats and Fishing Skis
Beside Ski Boats catching some good numbers of dorado off the deep reefs off Durban, quite a few have recently been caught on the shallower reefs off the North and South coasts. Snoek on the other hand have made some significant appearances in the Umdloti and Westbrook areas. When feeding, fishing skis have caught some very good fish of late. With weather conditions steadily improving ski’s and ski boats should start landing some good fish. The Cape Vidal area is also fishing well with reports of dorado, wahoo, sailfish, small tunny and the odd couta being boated. Further north, the Sodwana area has over the past few weeks produced some very good catches of marlin, at least two fish over the 300 kg mark have been accounted for and many smaller fish have been tagged and released. Fishing on the Aliwal Shoal and the Protea banks have also started picking up with catches of wahoo and tunny being reported.Divers have reported sighting the odd couta in these areas but to date none have been reported to have been landed. General bottom fishing is still going well when the sea lets up as there are still good numbers of geelbek and daga salmon around.
