ROCK AND SURF
FISHING REPORT 18TH APRIL 2009
Autumn has well and truly
set in as mornings are a little cooler and the off shore
winds have started blowing. These factors indicate that
the summer fish are going to start dwindling and the arrival
of the first shoals of winter fish should start making
an appearance very soon.
Shad have moved in and in the
Transkei in particular there have been some very good catches
of good size fish. On our coastline however anglers are
still working hard for their fish.
There are some fish
to be had but they seem a little erratic in feeding habits.
Places like Winkle and Toti rocks can on its day produce
many fish but the next day the fish seem to disappear and
surface elsewhere.
Never the less, shad are in the areas
where they should be and it’s the jekyl and hide
tactics that are going to ensure that anglers can out smart
these fish.
The flatfish are also slowing down quite a
bit but some good size diamond skates are being caught
along the Illovo stretch when conditions allow.
Reports
of some big sand sharks are still coming in from the deepwater
points on the South Coast.
Port Edward has been a buzzing
little resort and visitors are out on the rocks in the
good weather conditions here most of the time. Shad have
been plentiful most of the time. Some hound sharks have
also been taken at deep-water points and a large ribbon
tail skate of 40 kg was also landed at Splash Rock early
this week.
As expected, kob is here and mostly visiting
fishermen are taking a number of shoal size fish from the
area.
Transkei is also producing some good shark fishing
as there are favourable reports coming from the Hole In
The Wall area where some good size hammerhead sharks have
recently been caught.
At night in this same area anglers
have found some good shoal size kob.
Locally there are some nice edible fish around
in the form of pompano, grunter and the odd stumpie.
Ski Boat and Fishing ski's
Ski Boat and fishing skis are still having a good
season as far as game fish goes. Snoek are not as plentiful
as they were a week or so ago but some really nice size
fish have come out. Couta are a bit elusive but a few very
big specimens have been taken on both North and South Coasts.
Kieth Hockly bagged a fine fish of 18 kg last week but
the fish of the week must go to junior angler Tyrone Waller
who caught and boated a magnificent couta of 25,3 kg off
Justin Vincent’s boat “Spug Pug” at
Warner Beach last Sunday.
