KZN FISHING REPORT - 27 December 2008

FISHING REPORT, 27TH DECEMBER 2008.
Christmas has come and gone and anglers can look forward to the New Year.
Angling conditions have suited shore based anglers lately as light to moderate Easterly winds have for the past few days blown consistently which makes for ideal angling.
The Umkomaas stretch has performed well over the past few weeks and is still yielding good results.
Small shad are being caught in the vicinity of the river mouth as has shoal kob and some better size grunter.
Certainly a great time for some anglers with the weather being the perfect gift. Fish caught in Port Edward have been plentiful including some large shad, a 25kg kob, some hammerhead sharks, grey sharks plenty bronze bream and even a 12,5kg dorado from the side.
Even the Durban North area has produced fish, a number of sandies, blue and brown rays. Lloyd Pereira and his dad Mike fished on Saturday evening and landed two brown’s, one of 16.53kg’s and the other 11.12kg’s, a blue ray of 6.84kg’s and lost a sandie of about 30kg’s in the shore break.
Ivan Stopforth landed a sandie of around 30kg’s from Umhlanga Light House on Saturday morning and in the Sheffield Beach area Rob Jameson landed a sandie of about 35kg’s as well as a massive shad of over 4kg’s.
A number of fish were seen landed in this area over the weekend.
The Beachwood area is also producing a variety of edible and in edible fish recently and the same can be said for almost the entire KZN coast.
Those anglers targeting big kingfish should persevere on the North Bank area with live shad as these big predators are still around.
Inedible such as sand sharks and a variety of skates have also been biting well and the odd really big honeycomb ray has also been landed.
Anglers fishing the Zululand beaches are now having some great angling as the much expected butterfly rays have now firmly entrenched themselves on this particular stretch of coastline.
The main areas for them now are the Port Durnford and Amatikulu areas.
The Tugella North Bank can also produce some good results at this time of the year.
