KZN FISHING REPORT - 17 October 2008

ROCK & SURF
With weather steadily improving and warmer water pushing in fishing should start gaining momentum as far as early summer fish are concerned. Reports from the Kosi Bay area suggest that a few big kingfish and some bigger sand sharks have already been landed up there. Black fin sharks have also been caught there during the late afternoon and early evening sessions. The Zululand beaches are still fishing well with good catches of garrick and kob being reported. The odd big sand shark and diamond skate has been taken from the beaches at Port Durnford and Amatikulu.

ROCK & SURF - North Coast
The North Coast is also fishing well with Barracuda rocks and the Tongaat long beach area featuring quite prominent. Good catches of mainly garrick are being taken on most days and the odd big kob has also fallen foul to some anglers.

ROCK & SURF - South Coast
The South Coast is still firing an all cylinders with very good catches of garrick being reported in the Toti, Winkle and Illovo stretches. However most anglers here have changed their tactics and are now targeting brusher which seems to be feeding on most of the rocky points here. The Twini ledge and Doonside have over the past few weeks produced some good numbers of above average size fish. Anglers fishing for brusher have had some big stumpies and even a few big pompano grabbing bait intended for brusher.

Left:Siva Govender with a shad of 4.796kg's caught at Scottborough during September 2008. Siva took first prize for the month of September, a 14' Kingfisher Poseidon 5pc Graphite Rod, valued at R1, 585.00 in The Kingfisher "Biggest Shad Competition".

In the Port Edward area, a number of garick have been taken over the past few days. Most of the fish are small though and live baits are being used. There is the odd shad there and those captured are much larger than last month. Bronze bream are also on the bite and in between some really large stone bream are giving good sport to reef fishermen. Other than that, last Saturday morning an outing for Terry produced a number of blacktail, a bronze bream and for his pleasure a brusher of 3,5kg, Terry’s first good fish on his new lite HMG. All on prawn and on the same morning, a friend of Terry’s landed a huge stone bream of well over 4kg’s at Lighthouse Point. Last Sunday morning was a bit weedy an all that was landed were large blacktail, a lesser sand shark and using a red nylon sinker, an angry catfish that came out of a crevice and stole it while Terry was baiting up, a fight he won't forget. It took almost 5 minutes to retrieve the sinker from it. Thanks Terry Nel from Tacklenet in Port Edward for this report.

ROCK & SURF - Durban

The Durban area itself should start fishing better now but shad seem to be the only fish here that is causing concern amongst anglers as almost any bait intended for other species seems to be ravaged by shad. Apart from the shad some garrick, small kob and the odd grunter has been taken by anglers recently. The Durban Bay has started to produce a few nice fish, in amongst the grunter caught the odd early springer has been landed. A good springer of about 6kg’s was caught from the center bank, nice to have these fish back in the Bay.

ROCK & SURF - Transkei
The Transkei is also still producing a steady flow of fish, mainly garrick and kob. Two really nice size kob have recently been caught at the Lighthouse area of Port St johns. Fishing at night with artificial lures, Darryl Roberts succeeded in landing a very big kob of 32 kg and not to be outdone Springbok surfer and hardened angler Franki Oberholtze also landed a good specimen of 30 kg the same night.

FISHING COMPETITIONS
Here with a summary of the results of the Zululand Interclub fished at Sodwana Bay over weekend 10-11 October 2008. The competition was won by boat Lihann from Richards Bay. 2nd was Squmfeme and 3rd Maxsea. Andre Joubert on his boat Frigate landed a kingfish weighing 12kg, a tropical yellowtail of 15,5kg. J. Joubert on the same boat landed a couta of 14,95kg. There were 2 marlin released as well as a sailfish.
Tuna, wahoo and dorado were also boated. Unfortunately the fish were not in abundance.

SKI BOATS & FISHING SKI'S
Ski Boats can start rigging their game fish equipment as the first dorado have been landed in the Durban area as well as few specimens on the South Coast. Anglers fishing on the Aliwal Shoal recently have landed numerous wahoo and much to their delight a few couta were found between them. Bottom fishing is still producing good catches of daga and geekbek salmon as well as good reds and rock cod. Thanks to Avril Farman for this feedback on the recent Interclub fished in Zululand.
