ROCK & SURF
Mark from Tackle Box in Shelly Beach has this report. Darren Raath was fishing off his paddle ski at Scotties on Sunday and after trolling all the fresh baits possible, decided to pull the good old Rapala on his way in, and was rewarded with a couta of 23kg’s. Just goes to show fish still eat plastic!!! A couple of bronze bream were caught of the Shelly Beach tidal pool ranging in the 1 – 2 kg mark but very little shad were reportedly caught. Things were also very quiet on the offshore side with no notable catches reported. Let’s hope things start getting better towards the weekend. Unfortunately at the time of writing this report no news has been received from the SAP compo, but as soon as received will give the results.
Down in lower South Coast Terry Nel from Port Edward informs us that weather conditions over the last week have left the sea dirty and only a few shad are being caught.
KINGFISHER'S BIGGEST SHAD COMPETITION |
| Monster 38 kg couta that was recently landed on the Transkei coast by John Leppan using a live shad. |

Please note that all shad (fresh) must be weighed at The Kingfisher, 53 Hunter Street, Durban during trading hours and please remember there is a bag limit of four and the minimum size is 30cm. |
ESA
The ESA boys are back after a few days in Mozambique, they landed a few great fish, a kingie of 32kg’s landed by Ray on light tackle was one and a salie of 25kg’s by Dean on his new Daiwa Exceler spinning reel the other, we will try and get a photo of this salie.
Also don’t forget to tune into SS1 on Tuesday at 19.00 for ESA bass and Thursday at 19.30 for the ESA salt water section, great viewing.
This UHTFC report kindly supplied by Bill Simson. The fishing has been very good this month although the weather has been very cold in the early mornings and evenings. They have recently stocked many dams with trout of 220 mm to 225mm in length and their impact on the food supply has forced the big fish to be far more active and less fussy about what there is to eat The result is that the smaller fish keep the anglers busy and every now and then a big fish is caught. The biggest recently is one of 3kg with many around 2kg being brought to the net.
FISHING MAGAZINES
Two very good fishing magazines are out this month. The Fish Magazine by Hennie Papenfuss (second issue) is out and selling well at R25.00. In this issue they discuss Dropshop Basics, Insight into Tag and Release, Saltwater Fly Fishing in Zululand , Reading Water , Featured Fish – Blue Emperor, plus much more. The other magazine that is out and selling well at R19.95 is the ESA magazine. In this issue, a write up about The Stealth Supalite X 2010 Paddle Ski, Sodwana Bay – Extreme Destination, The Stick Bait, Bass Gear Test – Triton Boats and on the Ski Boat side – How to Release Fish Safely. The cover is a beautiful blue fin kingie caught by Ray.
KINGFISHER FISHING CLINICS
The Kingfisher hosts free fishing clinics on their premises, 53 Hunter Street, Durban once a month. They host a Paddle Ski Fishing clinic by Markham Pollard, a Rock and Surf clinic run by Ivan Stopforth and a Drop Shot clinic by Lloyd Pereira. These Clinics are very informative and covers all the basics, including equipment, knots, bait presentation, and tactics. These free clinics are there to help beginners and experienced anglers to see what the sport is all about and how to target certain species of fish. It also shows anglers what equipment to use and also elaborates on safety. These are very popular so book early to avoid disappointment. To book for one of these free clinics phone the Kingfisher on 031-3683903.
